Gardley is an Oakland, Calif., playwright known for his poetical language in works including “… And Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi” and “Black Odyssey.” His latest is “X: Or, Betty Shabazz v. the Nation,” commissioned by the Acting Company, based in New York, for a world-premiere national tour that launched this week in Arizona.

OLEAN — Tom Alan Robbins stood on the Olean High School auditorium stage Wednesday in front of several dozen students as they sang “Wells Fargo Wagon,” part of “The Music Man,” a production they’ll put on next week.

Steve and Anita Shevett, the house photographers for the Tony Awards since 1980, reveal the stories behind the iconic shots that captured unforgettable Broadway moments.

Although Anita Shevett had dreams of performing, it was photography that proved to be her calling. “I started at the High School of Performing Arts, where they told me I had a natural eye for photography,” says Anita, who went on to study at the University of California, Berkeley, and took pictures for their drama department.

MARGOT HARLEY TO STEP DOWN AFTER 43 YEARS

Margot Harley, who cofounded The Acting Company with John Houseman in 1972, will step down as its Producer effective the end of this year. The Acting Company began with the first graduating class of Juilliard’s Drama Division, which included Kevin Kline, Patti LuPone, David Schramm and David Ogden Stiers. “They were classically trained, superbly talented and had worked together for four years,” stated Ms. Harley.
